The AFB helps to eliminate the need to fumigate, or treat your fields for nematodes and other parasitic organisms found in the soil. It does this by improving the Soil Food Web. The AFB does not kill pests directly, but sets up a conducive environment in the soil for beneficial microorganisms to flourish. The beneficial predatory microorganisms in the soil feed on, and help control, the parasitic organisms that damage your potato crop.
Insect pests not only do physical damage to a plant, but they act as vectors (carriers), transmitting disease to the potatoes. Insecticides have been used for years to combat insect pests, but insect crop damage is increasing today at an alarming rate, especially in commercial potato production. What is the answer?
In order for the plant to combat insect and disease problems, it must have a healthy immune system. The Kozgro program creates a healthier immune system, which in turn will help prevent diseases from being transmitted from plant to plant.
Potato farmers on the Kozgro program have reported they have produced more potatoes with higher quality and better shelf life. Also, the soil is more mellow with fewer clods, and have fewer problems with Parasitic Nematodes, insect pests, and diseases.
Using AFB helps to increase the availability and utilization of fertilizers. The fertilizer will also remain in the root zone longer, while the losses from leaching, volatilization, and being tied up, are reduced. This is normally the reason 20 to 25% less nitrogen fertilizer will be needed to produce the same, or more, potato crop when using the Kozgro program.
As the AFB helps to build the humus in the soil, it improves the water retention of the soil. It also helps to improve water penetration to the point other products are not needed to do this. This results in a water savings of up to 25% per growing season.
In the early stages of the Kozgro program, you will normally find the soil to be more mellow, better water penetration and retention, better root growth (especially hair roots), and better stress tolerance. The next benefits to look for are better plant growth, better potato set, and larger size potatoes. The end result is more production of higher quality potatoes, generally at less cost.
